Details

Lentils are used extensively in Indian cooking and star in a variety of dishes, including daal makhani. A typical daal makhani recipe includes lentils, kidney beans, butter and cream, producing a rich, flavorful, satisfying dish that can be prepared in a slow cooker. While this dish usually calls for black lentils, you can substitute our brown lentils and enjoy! Our brown lentils can also be used in a variety of lentil curry dishes. Simply cook lentils with rice, aromatics like garlic and ginger, tomatoes, coconut milk, spices and peas for a simple yet scrumptious vegan meal. But why stop there? Dried lentils are fantastic in soup, lentil salad, and a variety of irresistible plant-based foods. Lentils are an incredibly rich source of dietary fiber, with 19 grams per 1/4-cup serving and 11 grams of protein. They contain nine essential amino acids, which makes them a popular source of protein for vegetarians, vegans and anyone focusing on a plant-based diet. Our lentils are also an excellent source of iron and contain calcium. One of the best things about lentils is how versatile they are! They can be soaked, boiled, fried and even baked. Their soft texture and mild flavor allows lentils to pair with all kinds of flavors and ingredients, which is part of what has made them so popular around the world for thousands of years. In fact, lentils are the oldest pulse crop in the history of the world. Evidence supports humans eating them as early as 11,000 BCE in Greece.
