Molasses is the by-product of refining sugar cane or sugar beets into sugar. Different coloured molasses have their own uses, textures, flavour and consistencies. Our dark molasses are most commonly used in baking, and can sometimes add a bitter taste. It adds a distinct smoky taste that is easily identifiable. Dark molasses should only be used when the recipe calls for it, as it has a much stronger taste than regular molasses and may overpower the recipe. How to use
This can be mixed or stirred into your recipe as needed. It has a malty sweetness and can be used in baking and cooking. Molasses can add texture and sweetness to marinades and sauces like barbecue sauces. It is also what makes gingerbread cookies brown, soft and chewy.
This item can be used in soft molasses cookies, molasses cream, toffee puddings or even used to sweeten coffee. Use molasses as substitutes for maple syrup in pancakes or oatmeal. In baked items, molasses create a moist consistency and are used in desserts like pecan pie and dark bread like pumpernickel bread. The sweetness of molasses and its thick consistency also pair well with grilled meat and can be used in marinades.
